Idris Elba is about to reprise his role yet again in a new Luther feature film from Netflix, which will follow the events of the original TV series and Netflix’s movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Netflix revealed Idris Elba will be starring alongside Ruth Wilson once again, who wasn’t in Netflix’s 2023 movie The Fallen Sun, but in the original series. Dermot Crowley will also be in the new thriller, which has been revealed to be directed by Jamie Payne, who worked on the BBC’s original series and The Fallen Sun.
Creator Neil Cross will be returning to write the new feature film, and what is known so far is that the story sees a new wave of random murders in London, while Luther is secretly called back into service. Luther must figure out how to save London while also trying to save himself from everyone wanting the detective dead.
Director Payne spoke of Cross’s involvement and stated:
“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Spoilers ahead for Luther
Luther originally began on the BBC in 2010 and ran for five seasons with an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows homicide detective John Luther, who has the odd but helpful gift of getting into the minds of murderers. However, Luther’s methods for capturing criminals while also dealing with his own personal demons put him and those around him in danger.
Wilson’s return as the psychotic killer Alice Morgan and Luther’s love interest will have a lot of fans’ attention. At the end of season 5, Morgan appeared to plummet to her death following a fight with Luther at a construction site. However, in typical Morgan fashion, it appears her death could’ve been fabricated or perhaps she will appear as a figment of Luther’s imagination and an inner demon personifying itself.
Cross spoke of Crowley, Elba, and Wilson’s returns fondly:
“Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family,” stated Cross. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Netflix’s Luther: The Fallen Sun received a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and achieved both commercial and critical success with a strong debut on the streamer. While it had mixed critical reviews, fans of the original series were delighted to see their favorite detective fighting crime once again.
Shooting for the new Luther feature film will begin in February, but it currently has no release date available.
