Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sounded the alarm over what he calls a growing threat to judicial fairness in Nigeria. Watch This Now.
Speaking in a video shared by SYMFONI TV, Sowore criticized the luxurious houses reportedly built for judges by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, calling them mansions rather than the modest homes officially described.
Sowore warned that judges who accept such gifts cannot be trusted to act impartially, and advised Nigerians to take action when their cases are before such judges. “If you are brought before a judge who collected house from Wike, just tell the judge to recuse himself,” he said, emphasizing the importance of protecting fairness in the courts.
He reminded citizens that this is not a new problem in Nigeria. In the past, renowned lawyer Gani Fawehinmi famously challenged judges who accepted luxury cars from political leaders, showing how gifts from powerful figures can compromise judicial integrity.
According to Sowore, accepting expensive gifts creates a conflict of interest that can sway judicial decisions. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and not be afraid to call out situations where a judge’s impartiality might be compromised. Citizens have the right to demand fairness, and Sowore says it is their duty to ensure justice is served, even if it means challenging powerful people.
