Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has put on hold his planned formal collection of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) membership card, weeks after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to prolonged internal disputes.
Naijaonpoint reports that Atiku was scheduled to formalise his defection by receiving his membership card from ADC officials, but the process has now been delayed.
A top ADC chieftain at the national level, who spoke to Sunday Punch on condition of anonymity, alleged that ...ponement may be linked to a brewing power tussle between Atiku and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
According to the source, the Obi political movement has allegedly “hijacked ADC structures in the South,” a development that could threaten Atiku’s 2027 presidential ambition.
The source said, “From all indications, if things did not work out well for Atiku within a few weeks to come, I see him defecting to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).”
The ADC chieftain further claimed that the recent suspension of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the SDP was due to fears that Atiku might join the party and create what he described as a “political cartel”.
Sunday Punch also gathered that several Atiku support groups within the ADC are pressuring their leaders to leave the party if the current crisis remains unresolved.
