In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, El-Rufai said he fears people who fail to understand that in a democracy, the executive is not all-powerful. He stressed that the system relies on checks and balances among the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
According to him, the legislature has not been allowed to function independently, while the judiciary is being “procured and weaponized” against opposition members. He warned that such actions threaten democracy and could pave the way for tyranny.
El-Rufai highlighted that true democratic governance depends on respecting the independence of all arms of government, not concentrating authority in the executive.
