In the latest step in his campaign against the United Kingdom, President Donald Trump on Monday announced a review of the American position on the Falkland Islands — a British overseas territory claimed by Argentina. a British Overseas Territory claimed by Argentina.
“I always review every position. That’s just one of many,” Trump said in the Oval Office when asked about the islands’ sovereignty.
The United States recognises British administration of the Falkland Islands, but it has taken a neutral position on the question of sovereignty and has maintained over the years that the issue should be addressed bilaterally by the UK and Argentina.
But Trump is now using the question of sovereignty as leverage against the UK as part of his campaign against the country and its Labour government.
Trump uses Falkland Islands to increase pressure on UK
The Telegraph previously reported that Trump’s review is part of a campaign to pressure the UK into raising defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP on core defence requirements by 2035. The UK has pledged to raise defence spending to 3.5 per cent but questions remain about the adequacy of its plans.
But Trump’s critics have argued that defence spending is merely an excuse, and that the pressure is actually part of the Maga movement’s campaign to oust moderate governments across Europe and instal far-right regimes in their place. The Trump administration and allies outside government —such as Elon Musk— have unabashedly interfered in European elections and publicly backed far-right parties in the UK, Germany, France, Hungary, and elsewhere.
The argument fits the Falkland Islands case as well as Argentina’s far-right leader, Javier Milei, is a staunch Trump ally.
The Telegraph reported a senior Pentagon official as saying that the UK would receive “special attention” in Trump’s campaign in Europe.
“I would expect the UK to receive special attention because it has so much potential. We will therefore continue efforts to incentivise and enable the UK to step up in a major way,” the official said.
Hints of the campaign first emerged in April when a leaked Pentagon memo suggested that the Trump administration could use a review of its position on the Falkland Islands as leverage against Nato allies.
