Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Betta Edu has called on citizens to embrace unity, patriotism, and shared responsibility in building a stronger and more prosperous nation as Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary today, October 1, 2025.
Naijaonpoint reports that Edu, in her Independence goodwill message made available to journalists on Wednesday morning, described the anniversary as both a time for thanksgiving and a renewed commitment to the founding ideals of peace, unity, and progress.
Edu hailed the resilience and innovative spirit of Nigerians, insisting that the people remain the country’s greatest strength.
“Nigerians are specially crafted with great determination, an unconquerable spirit, and a limitless possibilities mindset,” she said.
She noted that Nigerian citizens had distinguished themselves globally across multiple fields, ensuring that the country continues to command respect on the world stage.
Edu also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what she described as his bold and decisive policy reforms, which she said were already laying a strong foundation for growth.
“These initiatives are laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and national renewal. Though challenges persist, the Renewed Hope Agenda provides a clear pathway to stability, reforms, and expanded opportunities for all Nigerians. We are already at the end of the tunnel; all we see now is green ahead,” she declared.
She specifically pointed to the government’s efforts in repositioning the economy, extending care to vulnerable citizens, and entrenching “citizen-centred governance.”
The former minister urged Nigerians to see the country’s diversity as an advantage rather than a challenge, stressing that Nigeria’s large population and resource base provide fertile ground for investment and opportunities.
She added that unity and collective sacrifice would guarantee a brighter future.
“Together, we can turn today’s sacrifices into tomorrow’s prosperity,” she said.
Naijaonpoint reports that Nigeria marks its independence from Britain every October 1. However, this year’s celebrations were scaled down after the Federal Government cancelled the traditional parade.
Despite the scaled-down activities, President Tinubu delivered a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. today to commemorate the anniversary.
