India, Germany step up strategic partnership as Misri holds high-level talks in Berlin

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday met German political leaders and senior government officials to discuss ways to deepen the bilateral strategic partnership across key areas, including trade, defence, technology and innovation.

Misri arrived in Germany after concluding a visit to France, where he held talks on a broad range of issues such as civil nuclear energy, defence, space and digital cooperation

The discussions focused on deepening the India + Germany Strategic Partnership across key pillars of cooperation, including trade, defence, technology and innovation,” the Indian Embassy in Berlin said in a post on X.

“They exchanged perspectives on regional and global developments,” it added.

Misri’s visit comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia following the failure of the United States and Iran to secure a lasting peace agreement after marathon talks held in Pakistan over the weekend.

US President Donald Trump has since announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to disrupt Iran’s oil exports to China and other countries amid a worsening global energy crisis.

Misri, who arrived in Berlin for the India-Germany Foreign Office consultations, also engaged with think tanks and members of the foreign policy community at Koerber Stiftung.

“The exchange covered key areas of India+Germany Strategic Partnership, including trade, security and defence, Digital Governance and role of India + Germany+ EU in evolving global order,” the Indian mission said.

It added that geopolitical developments affecting energy, food and economic security were also discussed.

During his visit, Misri paid floral tributes to BR Ambedkar at the Indian embassy, reaffirming his “enduring message of justice, equality and fraternity enshrined in the Indian Constitution,” according to the mission.

Misri is scheduled to co-chair the India-Germany Foreign Office Consultations with Géza Andreas von Geyr.

The discussions will span a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, defence and security, technology, green energy, development cooperation, education and people-to-people ties, as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest, the Ministry of External Affairs said ahead of his visit.

The visit follows German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to India in January 2026 and reflects ongoing high-level engagement between the two countries.

India’s Ambassador to Germany Ajit Gupte said the visit offers an opportunity to review the full spectrum of the bilateral strategic partnership.

“Advance discussions across key pillars of the bilateral agenda and exchange perspectives on regional and global developments” are scheduled to take place during the visit, he added.
