Indian lawmaker and member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Gogi has tragically passed away after accidentally shooting himself, sustaining fatal head injuries.
Naijaonpoint reports that the incident occurred late Friday night, according to his family.
Gogi was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The Punjab Police have confirmed the death, indicating that the incident appears to be an accident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja provided further details, stating, “As per the family members, Gurpreet Gogi accidentally shot himself, resulting in bullet injuries to his head. He was declared dead at the hospital, and his body is now at the mortuary in DMC Hospital.”
The exact cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination. “...-mortem report will clarify the cause of death,” added the DCP. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Gogi, who joined the AAP in 2022, rose to prominence after defeating two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana assembly elections.
This incident recalls a similar tragedy in 2019, when Carl Robinson, a candidate for the Mississippi state legislature, fatally shot his wife before taking his own life.
