The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned politicians and political parties against engaging in premature campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning follows a growing wave of endorsements allegedly in favour of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, warned that the electoral body has not yet issued a timetable or schedule for the next election cycle, and therefore, all forms of early campaigning remain unlawful.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections. To that extent, party primaries have not been held and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election,” Oyekanmi said.
This comes amid criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups who have accused loyalists of the President of violating the Electoral Act by drumming up support for a second term through posters, public rallies, and unofficial declarations.
Quoting Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act, Oyekanmi reminded stakeholders that official campaigns can only commence 150 days before the election and must end 24 hours before polls open. He also referenced Section 95(1), which mandates that campaigns conform to INEC regulations.
“While individuals have the right to express political opinions, coordinated endorsements, mobilisation, and promotional materials aimed at influencing electoral outcomes outside the campaign window are in breach of the law,” he stated.
INEC disclosed that the issue had been raised during its most recent consultative meeting with political parties and urged all actors to comply strictly with the legal framework guiding elections.
