The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a “full-blown indictment” of the Nigerian judicial system and a demonstration of the Federal Government’s “reckless abuse” of judicial processes. In a statement, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, said the trial is a conspiracy built on falsehoods and media manipulation.
Powerful noted that the prosecution’s case collapsed under cross-examination, with the last prosecution witness being evasive, contradictory, and unprepared. He also pointed out that the government’s attempt to link Kanu to the #EndSARS protests was “laughable” and “intellectually bankrupt.”
The group highlighted several disturbing revelations in court, including the lack of evidence of the 200 security operatives allegedly killed in the South-East and the fabrication of assessment reports purportedly tying IPOB to security breaches. Powerful questioned why the Nigerian press has ignored these courtroom revelations and urged Nigerians and the international community to obtain Certified True Copies of the daily proceedings to see the collapse of the Federal Government’s case.
IPOB maintained that Kanu is not on trial for violence but for demanding justice for a long-oppressed people and speaking truth to power. The group described the government’s case against Kanu as “a monument to state-sponsored falsehood.”
