The strongest armor in Iron Man’s vast catalog is back… but not in the way that fans would expect. Tony Stark is an inventor at heart, and is known for creating several different iterations of the Iron Man armor. They all have advantages and disadvantages, but there’s no denying the Mark 72 armor is the strongest of the bunch.
Also known as the Sentinel Buster, the Iron Man Mark 72 debuted during the Invincible Iron Man run that saw Iron Man teaming up with the X-Men in 2024. The armor was only short-lived, however, as Iron Man ditched it after defeating his nemesis, Feilong, of the anti-mutant organization Orchis.
Instead of returning to the comics, the Sentinel Buster is featured as a figure from Hasbro. Retailing for $27.99, Marvel Legends Series Iron Man (Mark 72) is a six-inch scale Marvel figure inspired by the Armored Avenger’s look in the comics. Most notably, Iron Man’s armor uses a mostly red and black color scheme.
The X-Men Are Responsible For Iron Man’s Strongest Armor
Iron Man realizes that if he is going to defeat Feilong and his new army of Stark Sentinels, he has to upgrade his armor. At the time, Tony Stark is married to the X-Men’s Emma Frost, so he turns to her to help him retrieve the precious metal known as Mysterium.
Mysterium is forged from the heart of creation and appears to be stronger than known metals such as Adamantium and Vibranium. You’d think there would be an arms race for Mysterium, but so far, only mutants have been able to get it. And with the Fall of X in the rearview, Mysterium has gone by the wayside.

Iron Man’s Mysterium Armor Puts The Hulkbuster To Shame
One of Iron Man’s most infamous pieces of armor is the Hulkbuster, aka the Mark XLVIII. The massive piece of metal is featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War. Both Tony Stark and Bruce Banner don the Hulkbuster armor, but for different reasons.
Tony suits up in the Hulkbuster to try and stop a rampaging Hulk controlled by Wanda Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner wears the Hulkbuster in Avengers: Infinity War when Hulk refuses to help defend Earth in the Battle of Wakanda. When Hulk chooses to hide, the Hulkbuster will do in his place.
We’ve yet to see the Mysterium/Sentinel Buster/Mark 72 armor in the MCU, but never say never. Robert Downey Jr. may be busy playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but another hero could create it. After all, Riri Williams is around, and the X-Men will soon join the MCU as well.
