Scott Van Pelt was born in Brookeville, Maryland, to his parents, Sam Van Pelt and Cathie Mathis. He grew up in the Washington, DC, area. His grandfather came to the United States from Italy and lived in Brooklyn. Van Pelt attended Flower Valley Elementary School in Rockville, Maryland, and later enrolled at Sherwood High School in Sandy Springs.

In 1988, he started his journey at the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in radio/television and film. He’s also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Scott Van Pelt tied the knot with Stephanie in 2011, and they have three children, including their 10-year-old daughter named Lila Catherine. Having spent his childhood in Maryland and graduated from College Park, Van Pelt is a dedicated fan of the Maryland Terrapins, Washington Capitals, Washington Commanders, Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Wizards.
He embarked on his sports broadcasting career in 1990 at WTTG-TV (FOX) in Washington, DC, where he contributed to programs like Sunday Night’s Sports Extra, The 10:00 News, and special coverage of the Washington Redskins.
