Is The Swimmers Based On A True Story?

The incredible true story of two Syrian sisters who fled their civil war-torn nation and later participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics is told in the Netflix film The Swimmers.

Based on the amazing true tale of Olympian Yusra Mardini and her sister Sara, who fled war-torn Syria in 2015 with the goal of obtaining refuge in Germany, the movie tells their astonishing journey.

Both Yusra and Sara had dreams of competing in the Olympics in swimming, and it was their talent that saved them when they had to bravely swim next to the boat carrying them and many other refugees to safety in the Aegean Sea in order to save it from sinking.

What Happened To Yusra Mardini?

Yusra was especially keen to pursue her Olympic dream when they eventually arrived in Germany. With the support of coach Sven Spannekrebs, she was able to represent the IOC Refugee Olympic Team at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

While this was going on, Sara made the decision to shift her attention, abandoning her dreams of becoming a swimmer in favor of volunteering in Greece to assist other refugees like herself in safely crossing the Sea.

The Swimmers Netflix True Story Opening

Beginning a brief prologue to Yusra and Sara’s existence before the start of the civil war, the movie fast-forwards four years to illustrate the damage that has become a part of their daily lives, including a very close call with a bomb.

That prompts them to set off on the risky trek to Europe, where they can find some kind of protection, where they encounter a variety of difficult circumstances.

According to executive producer Tilly Coulson, “the research was incredibly extensive, so it was a tremendous assistance for Jack when he started approaching the first draft.” The producers “made a couple of visits to meet up with the sisters” to ensure certain portions of the movie seemed sufficiently authentic.
