Nigerian media personality IK Osakioduwa has revealed why he changed his surname.

He spoke about this during an appearance on The Nancy Isime Show.

Ik Osakioduwa previously known as Ik Obiara explained that the decision started years ago during a visit to a military hospital in Ikeja.

Naijaonpoint reports that at the time, he had gone there with his father, who was a soldier in the Nigerian Army.

While trying to get medical attention, he was asked to state his identity and mention whose son he was.

That moment made him reflect on his sense of identity and led him to consider a change.

He said his former surname did not sit well with him after he discovered its spiritual link to a deity, which was contradictory with his Christian beliefs.

That discovery made him uncomfortable, and he decided to find a new name.

“Back then, IK’s surname was Obiara, but that encounter him to question everything was inspired by the biblical story of Jacob, whose name changed after wrestling with God.

“I started researching my own name. Then I discovered my surname is embedded in some deity somewhere. I’m like, what does that mean? No, I’m a Christian. So I was like, okay, I want a different name,” he said.

The change did not happen instantly as it took him about four years to convince his father.

His mother quietly supported him through the process and he also spent time in prayer.

Eventually, he chose the surname Osakioduwa, which he says means “God opens the door to wealth.”

According to him, the new name brought about a positive shift in both his personal and professional life.
