‘It wasn’t to be’ – Steven Gerrard speaks out for the first time since Aston Villa sacking as he releases statement to thank players, fans and club

Steven Gerrard has released a statement and spoken out for the first time since being sacked by Aston Villa on Thursday.

The club confirmed his exit an hour after their 3-0 defeat to Fulham, which has left them 17th in the Premier League table, hovering tenuously above the relegation zone.

Gerrard’s Villa journey came to an end with a humbling defeat

The former Liverpool and England star was Villa boss for a year, having departed Rangers last November to replace Dean Smith.

But after a 14th place finish in the Premier League last season, this term has been a major struggle despite a significant outlay on transfers in the summer.

The Midlands club have won just two of their opening 11 games and are level on points and goal difference with Wolves, who currently sit in the bottom three.

Villa are not in the drop zone as things stand purely because they have scored nine goals so far this season, while Wolves have netted just five.

The club’s statement read: “Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect.

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

On Friday evening, Gerrard released a statement of his own.

It read: “I would like to thank everyone connected to Aston Villa Football Club, for the support shown to me during my time there.

“I would personally like to thank the board of directors, the players and all the staff for their hard work.

“To the fans, it is regrettable that it didn’t work out in the end.

“But I owe you a debt of gratitude for the way you welcomed me into your club, and continued to push the team on during difficult times.

“Aston Villa is a club with a special history, I really wanted to bring back those memorable achievements, unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

“I wish everyone at the club all the very best for the future. Steven Gerrard.”
