Comedian Jay Leno found himself in hot water over the weekend after joking about Jeremy Renner‘s recent snowplow accident on Twitter.
Leno, who broke several bones in a motorcycle accident of his own earlier this month, was making light of the incident when he brought up Renner’s scary New Year’s Day run-in with a snowplow.
“I was riding my motorcycle up in Lake Tahoe and I came around the corner and bam, I crashed into Jeremy Renner’s snowplow,” the former late night host tweeted Friday.
The Hawkeye star broke over 30 bones when he was pulled under a heavy-duty Sno-Cat plow outside his Nevada home while trying to save his nephew from a similar fate—a detail that some say should make the situation off-limits for jokes.
“Not funny,” former Bloomberg anchor John Dawson replied. “Renner broke 30 bones in the process of saving his nephew’s life. Respect to the guy. Pure guts.”
“Guy nearly died Jay,” another user wrote.
As for Renner, it’s hard to imagine that the Avengers sharp-shooter would be upset with Leno’s jokes—the star himself laughed about the situation with fellow actor Chris Evans, with Evans asking his Marvel pal, “Has anyone even checked on the Sno-Cat?”
“I did,” Renner responded with lighthearted emojis. “She needs fuel.”
Leno’s own accident was no laughing matter, either. Still recovering after a freak garage accident in November left him with second-degree burns, the former Tonight Show host kept the January 17 incident—which resulted in “a broken collarbone, two broken ribs, and two cracked kneecaps”—under wraps until recently.
Though he feels “OK” by his own admission and is already back to work, the comedian explained how he was “clotheslined” off of his motorcycle by a hidden wire that was stretched across a parking lot.
“I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot but with no flag hanging from it. So, you know, I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clotheslined me and, boom, knocked me off the bike. The bike kept going, and you know how that works out,” Leno shared with the Las Vegas Review-Journal last week.
