Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are circling their first movie together. Although the two stars have never acted onscreen opposite one another, they have had very similar career paths.
This includes both stars having breakout roles in young adult titles (for Lawrence, the Hunger Games movies, for Stone, Easy A) and winning Oscars (Lawrence won one for Silver Linings Playbook and Stone won two, for La La Land and Poor Things).
On November 5, Jennifer Lawrence was the guest on the new episode of the podcast Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. During her wide-ranging conversation with the two hosts, the topic turned to the Broadway hit Oh, Mary! and Lawrence revealed that “Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie“ that is being written by the play’s writer and star, Cole Escola.
When she was asked if she and Stone would be starring in the movie together, she said “I think so… We have to.” No further details about the project have been revealed at the time of writing.
Cole Escola has so far not written any screenplays for movies that have been officially released, but the Tony Award winner has had their fair share of writing credits on the small screen. Escola has penned episodes for a variety of television series, including The Other Two, At Home with Amy Sedaris, and Ziwe.
Their irreverent humor and ability to craft compelling narratives around iconic female figures could very well be a good fit for a story centering on Miss Piggy, who is one of the most iconic characters from the long-running Muppets franchise.
Miss Piggy, a pig who is a glamorous diva and is romantically obsessed with Kermit the Frog, first appeared on the 1974 special Herb Alpert and the TJB before being developed into a bigger character on The Muppet Show. Since then, she has appeared in a wide variety of Muppets projects and has become one of the puppets franchise’s most well-known characters, alongside Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Animal.
It is unknown what roles Lawrence and Stone might play opposite Miss Piggy, but Muppet movies typically feature several human figures starring alongside the iconic puppets, as well as a robust roster of celebrity cameos.
In fact, the most recent Muppet movie, 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted, featured a wide variety of well-known human performers, including Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Lady Gaga, James McAvoy, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ray Liotta, Tom Hiddleston, Stanley Tucci, Danny Trejo, Saoirse Ronan, Salma Hayek, Christoph Waltz, Ross Lynch, and Josh Groban.
Given the history of the franchise, it stands to reason that both Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone could appear in the movie. Even if their busy schedules lead to them only being able to make brief cameos, that approach would fit in with previous appearances from Muppets celebrity guests and allow them to finally have their first official movie together.
