Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson’s new movie, Die My Love, is now out in theaters, but the reception is proving to be mixed. Based on the 2012 book of the same name by Adna Walsh, Lawrence portrays Grace, whose mental health deteriorates as a result of her marriage and motherhood.
Since its premiere at Cannes, the Lynne Ramsay-directed movie has received positive reviews from critics, leading to a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with audiences getting a taste of the movie, they have been more critical of the Lawrence and Pattinson movie. Based on over 100 verified ratings, the audience score is currently at 44%, which marks Lawrence’s lowest since 2018’s Red Sparrow (51%).
Die My Love also received a D+ CinemaScore, making it clear that the film is quite divisive. It’s not the first time that a Lawrence film has faced this kind of reception, bringing back memories of the audience’s strong divided response to Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! Interestingly, some pundits have called Die My Love a spiritual companion piece to the 2017 psychological horror.
ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttman was among the critics who gave a glowing review for Die My Love, awarding it an 8 out of 10 stars. He described the film as “strikingly beautiful” due to “Ramsay and Lawrence’s willingness to lay it all bare and show a harsher side to love and motherhood, one that is often overlooked.“
While other critics also found the case study of Grace to be engaging and grueling, audiences don’t share the same view. General moviegoers felt confused about the story, with some finding it too loose, slow-paced, and difficult to understand.
However, critics and audiences are unanimous on one aspect of the movie, which happens to be Pattinson and Lawrence’s performances. In particular, Lawrence stands out as the stronger of the two, showcasing her character’s psychotic unraveling from the beginning to the end.
This has already raised questions about Lawrence’s Oscar potential, having earned nominations for the British Independent Film Awards and Gotham Independent Film Awards. She has already won an Oscar for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.
In addition to Pattinson and Lawrence, the Die My Love cast also includes Sissy Spacek, LaKeith Stanfield, and Nick Nolte.
