A trio of new images from John Wick: Chapter 4 reveal Keanu Reeves back in action as the titular assassin. Released courtesy of Total Film, the images offer our latest look at the highly anticipated sequel, with Reeves’ hitman meeting with his allies (of which he has very few), Laurence Fishburne’s The Bowery King and Ian McShane’s Winston Scott, with another image showing Reeves walking alongside returning director Chad Stahelski in Paris. John Wick: Chapter 4 will find Keanu Reeves’ title character continuing his quest for survival and revenge. The follow-up finds Wick facing off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and turns old friends into foes. With the price on his head ever-increasing, John Wick: Chapter 4 sees Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld.
According to this latest insight into John Wick: Chapter 4, Japan “figures heavily” in the sequel’s story, with production also taking place “in Berlin, Paris and New York.” Sadly, it is unlikely that Wick will get much chance to take in the sights and sounds of his new surroundings with the only sights he’s likely to see being his latest victims dropping dead as the sound of bullets echoes in his ears.
The third image reveals another look at martial arts legend and Ip Man star Donnie Yen as the mysterious Caine, a former friend of John Wick. Described by Total Film as “a blind assassin and High Table member who was a former ally of Wick’s,” the report reveals that Yen pushed back “against the idea of playing the role as a Zatoichi-style archetype” and instead wanted the character to sport the same slick suits as Wick.
Seeing Reeves and Yen face-off is by far one of the most exciting parts of John Wick: Chapter 4 for action fans, and Stahelski has teased what seeing the two stars exchange punches was like. “So, I’m standing in between, you’ve got Donnie Yen and you got Keanu Reeves, and you’re touching hands with all of them, blocking out stuff. And you’re like, ‘Holy shit. Those are really real,” he said before teasing the weaponry that will be on display when the pair meet on sceen.
“So, it always comes down to, I can do the Donnie Yen triple kick. I can do all this, but you also want to do something different,” Stahelski continued. “So, you start sitting, you come at it from character, and you have a lot of discussions with the guys going, ‘Okay, Donnie is amazing at this. Keanu is amazing at this. They’re both great actors, so let’s lean onto that, and let’s do something we haven’t seen before.’ So now, that Donnie Yen with a sword and a pistol and Keanu with a samurai sword and a couple of pistols and throwing an AR-15 and a glass mirror room with Japanese artifacts. And yeah, throw in a couple of dogs, and let’s see what happens.”
John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2023 by Lionsgate.
