Senator representing Abia South in the National Assembly, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has asserted that the problem with Nigeria’s electoral system is not the technology but rather the interpretation of laws by the courts.
Naijaonpoint reports that Abaribe made this known on Monday at the review of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) innovation in electoral technology (2015–2025) organised by the Anthena Centre in Abuja.
According to Abaribe, the Nigerian judiciary has failed to keep pace with the technological innovations introduced by INEC.
He argued that INEC guidelines, which should be considered part of the electoral law, are often disregarded by the courts.
He said, “I don’t think that there is anyone who is against innovation that will improve the process. If there’s anyone, not Enyinnaya Abaribe.
“I am actually a beneficiary of the new INEC process of direct transmission of results. The key issue we need to look at and most people are not paying attention is that our judicial processes are years behind the innovations we are implementing.”
Meanwhile, Abaribe recently rebuked members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) over accusations of an alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Naijaonpoint reports that the Abia State chapter of APGA, in a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Abaribe to clear the air over his alleged fraternity with the ADC or face sanctions.
APGA informed the former Senate Minority Leader that nobody would belong to two political parties simultaneously and demanded his stance on the allegation of anti-party activity.
The party stated that Senator Abaribe held meetings on August 18 and September 23, respectively, at his event centre in Aba, where he allegedly promoted ADC instead of APGA, and challenged him to confirm or deny his rumoured defection to ADC personally.
Senator Abaribe was also accused of abandoning the party and treating its leadership with disdain after using the party’s platform to secure a fifth term in the red chamber.
In response, Abaribe, speaking through his media aide, Uchenna Awom, in an interview with Vanguard, stated that the party knew how to access the Senator as its leader in the state and should stop dwelling on rumours.
