Julia Garner already has some award-winning roles under her belt, but there was a unique anticipation around the idea of seeing her play Madonna. Garner was reported as the pop icon in a biopic directed by Madonna herself, after beating out a number of actresses for the part in a grueling audition process. After all, reports from earlier this year suggested that the biopic had been put on pause due to Madonna’s upcoming world tour — but apparently, Garner remains optimistic that the project will pay off.
“Yes, yes,” Garner said subscriber to ET. “I don’t want to say too much. I want to keep things… yeah, fingers crossed.”
Why does Madonna bring out her autobiography?
While the idea of Madonna directing her resume might be seen as unconventional, the singer/actress has been vocal about wanting to approach her project right away.
Madonna previously said: “I have lived an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film.” diverse. “It was also a preemptive strike, because so many people were trying to make movies about me. Most of them were misogynistic men. So, I put my foot in the door and said, ‘Nobody’s going to tell my story but me.’” … I have a really long script that’s really hard for me to shorten. I’ve been flopping it so far, but it’s like cutting off my limbs.”
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me as an artist, musician, dancer and human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement when the project was announced. “The focus of this film will always be on the music. The music has kept me going and the art has kept me alive. There are so many untold stories that are inspiring and better told than me. It is essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and my vision.”
“This movie is a labor of love for me,” Pascal added. “I’ve known Madonna since we created ‘A League of Their Own’ together, and I couldn’t imagine anything more exciting than collaborating with her and Diablo to bring her real-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”
