Rashad Murphy, one of the individuals accused of the murder of Florida rapper Julio Foolio, is preparing for a “possible insanity defense” in a bid to avoid the death penalty.

A motion filed last month in Hillsborough County court seeks the appointment of a confidential forensic neuropsychologist to examine

“Cases involving NGI — Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity — are very complicated,” his Daniel Hernandez wrote in the motion. “The doctor sought has been involved with several NGI cases over their career. One is required to complete a comprehensive report on the Defendant.”

Hernandez asks for “extensive” clinical interviews and psychological and neuropsychological testing.

Florida will reportedly pay for the forensic psychologist, who will cost $300 per hour, $125 for travel, and be capped at $15,000.

Murphy, 30, surrendered in July after a standoff with sheriff’s deputies. Suspects Isaiah Chance, 21; Sean Gathright, 18; and Alicia Andrews, 21, entered their pleas before a judge and await trial. Davion Murphy, the fifth suspect, is still on the run.
