The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has announced that the remains of the late Deputy Governor of the state, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, will be laid to rest on January 30, 2026.
The governor disclosed this on Wednesday during the 179th meeting of the State Executive Council held at the Government House, Yenagoa.
Diri said the state government had approved a four-day funeral programme for the late deputy governor following extensive consultations by a burial committee chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei.
According to the governor, the burial activities would commence on January 27 with sporting events in honour of Ewhrudjakpo.
“The programme begins Jan. 27 with sporting activities, followed by a Day of Tributes on Jan. 28,” Diri said.
The governor further disclosed that valedictory sessions would be held on January 29 at the State High Court and the Executive Council Chambers to honour the contributions of the deceased to governance and public service in the state.
He added that the funeral rites would be concluded on January 30 with a requiem mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ofoni, after which Ewhrudjakpo would be interred.
“On Jan. 30, a requiem mass will be held at St Paul’s Catholic Church, Ofoni, before interment,” the governor said.
Naijaonpoint reports that Ewhrudjakpo, who served as the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.
Governor Diri noted that the burial arrangements were jointly agreed upon by the Bayelsa State Government, the Ewhrudjakpo family, and the church.
“The government, family and church are all in agreement on the burial activities of our departed deputy governor,” the governor said.
