The national power grid experienced a collapse on Wednesday, leading to widespread power outages.
This was confirmed in a public notice dated September 10, 2025, by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) via a post on its X handle.
According to AEDC, the current power outage is due to a loss of supply from the national grid.
... reads, “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
The company, however, reassured the public that efforts are underway to restore the grid.
It added, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised.

The national grid has been unstable in recent years, collapsing 12 times in 2024 and over 100 times in the past decade.
In February this year, the grid also collapsed, plunging many Nigerians into darkness.
In response to the frequent outages, six firms and one private university were granted approval by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April to generate and distribute electricity.
Despite these ongoing challenges, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s July report stated,
“There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1.”
