The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to suspend its national convention scheduled to hold this weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the convention must be put on hold until former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, is allowed to obtain a nomination form and participate in the chairmanship contest.
Justice Lifu held that evidence before the court showed Lamido was “unjustly denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form” for the National Chairmanship position, contrary to the provisions of the PDP Constitution and its internal regulations.
The judge emphasised that the party has a constitutional obligation to provide a level playing field for all members.
He declared that political parties must “create opportunities for their members to serve by putting deliberate measures in place to enable them to realise their aspirations.”
As part of the ruling, the court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising any outcome of a convention conducted without Lamido’s inclusion.
The injunction applies to the PDP convention scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Issuing consequential orders, Justice Lifu directed the party to halt preparations for the exercise, allow Lamido to purchase his forms, and provide sufficient time for him to mobilise supporters and campaign.
