The WhatsApp account of former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been hacked by suspected internet fraudsters.
Naijaonpoint reports that this was disclosed in a public notice issued on his social media page on Tuesday.
The former deputy governor urged the public to ignore messages coming from the account as he is no longer in control of it.
It was gathered that the hacker has tried to solicit financial aid from the Deputy’s contacts. In a screenshot from one of his contacts, the scammer had requested ₦850,000 to be sent to ‘someone’ with an account name Ifeanyi Emmanuel suspected however, to belong to him.
Shaibu, who is the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), called on his friends, family, and associates to disregard any of message from his WhatsApp account with phone number that ends with 119.
He wrote; “Please be informed that my WhatsApp line is currently experiencing some technical compromise. I kindly ask that you ignore any messages, requests, or promises that may appear to come from my account at this time, as they are not from me.
“I sincerely apologise for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciate your understanding and cooperation while this issue is being resolved.”
Another notice shared by the Special Adviser on Media to Shaibu, Ben Ogbemudia, read: “Please disregard any messages received from immediate past Deputy Governor and DG-NIS, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu’s WhatsApp number as his account has been compromised. Any messages sent are not from him. We appreciate your understanding and caution.”
