A fuel tanker conveying diesel overturned on Monday at the Tincan Liverpool Bridge in the Apapa area of Lagos.
Footage shared by Channels Television showed residents gathering beneath the bridge to scoop diesel from the fallen tanker.
In a post on X, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the road leading to the bridge was initially closed to traffic following the incident.
“The road on Liverpool bridge inward Apapa that was cordoned off has been reopened after the contents have been neutralised by men of Lagos State Fire Service,” the agency said.
“LASTMA officials are doing the needful and traffic is expected to move better, while we await the arrival of a tow truck.”
Earlier, the traffic agency had warned motorists of delays and safety measures around the area.
The incident has again drawn attention to the recurring practice of fuel scooping from fallen tankers across the country.
In October 2024, more than 100 people died after a petrol tanker exploded on the Kano–Hadejia expressway in Jigawa state.
Most of the victims in the Jigawa incident were reportedly attempting to scoop petrol when the tanker caught fire.
In October 2025, another petrol tanker explosion in the Essa community along the Agaie–Bida road in Katcha LGA of Niger state claimed several lives.
