A former senator who represented Kaduna Central in the national assembly, Shehu Sani has dropped a hint on the reason for tension at the palace of Kano Emir.

Senator Shehu in a short message on his X handle, said, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”

The tension at the palace began early on Friday morning when police officers, equipped with advanced gear, took over the Emir of Kano’s palace. The palace was surrounded as early as 6 a.m.

Sources within the palace hinted that the situation could be tied to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi’s intention to appoint a district head for Bichi town.

The recent development is not the first time the Kano emirship has been embroiled in controversy.

Recall that in May, the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero was dethroned by Governor Abba Yusuf while he was away and was replaced with the reinstatement of the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was immediately moved to the Kofar Kudu palace.

Bayero later returned to the state and settled at the Nassarawa mini palace, leading to court cases in support of and against the decision of the state government.

The Kano emirship crisis began in 2020 when Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed a law creating four new emirates in the state. The move was seen as an attempt to whittle down the powers of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. The emir was subsequently suspended by the state government, leading to widespread protests and condemnation from various quarters.
