A woman smuggling live ammunition for bandits operating in some parts of the Northwest region of Nigeria has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Zamfara State.

It was gathered that the woman was arrested by the operatives during a search operation along the Tsafe–Gusau highway.

Suspected to be a native of Birnin Magaji Local Government Area, the woman was said to have carefully hidden the weapons in her luggage during her trip through Tsafe.

Also confirming the suspect’s arrest, the Chairman of Tsafe Local Government, Garba Shehu, described the swiftness showcased by the NDLEA operatives as a major breakthrough in the effort to end banditry across the region.

Shehu stated that bandits have been smuggling logistics, arms and other items through their networks in Zamfara.

“I want to appreciate the NDLEA operatives for their vigilance and dedication. This arrest has prevented dangerous ammunition from reaching criminal elements threatening peace in our communities,” the chairman said.

He added that his administration is committed to unwinding support for security agencies and their operatives in the LGA.

“As a local government, we will continue to provide whatever support is necessary to ensure law enforcement officers carry out their duties effectively,” he said.

He also noted that the agency has successfully transferred the suspect to a secure facility for further investigation and to ascertain the intended recipient of the weapons intercepted from the suspect.
