The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend its national convention, originally scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday and Sunday.
The judgment, delivered on Friday by Justice Peter Lifu, also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising the outcome of any convention held without the inclusion of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido as a contestant.
The court noted that evidence presented showed Lamido was unfairly denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest the PDP National Chairmanship, in violation of both the party’s constitution and regulations.
Justice Lifu emphasized that the PDP has an obligation to provide its members with equal opportunities to participate in party affairs, ensuring that deliberate measures are in place to allow aspirants to realise their ambitions.
As a consequential order, the court directed that the convention be put on hold to allow Lamido sufficient time to obtain his nomination form, mobilize supporters, and conduct his campaign.
