Kaduna State government, led by Governor Uba Sani, has approved improved service conditions for teachers across the state.
The new policy, which takes effect from August 1, 2025, extends the mandatory retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, while the maximum years of service have also been increased from 35 to 40 years.
This, the government says, was a move aimed at strengthening the education sector and rewarding years of professional dedication.
In addition to the extension of retirement age, the governor has approved a special allowance for teachers posted to rural and hard-to-reach communities in the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, December 19, noting that the incentives were designed to encourage teachers to accept postings in underserved areas and improve access to quality education.
Maiyaki explained that the approval was in line with the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022, enacted by the National Assembly.
He said the Act exempts teachers from the general public service retirement threshold of 60 years or 35 years of service in recognition of their critical role in national development.
According to the Commissioner, a circular conveying the governor’s approval has been issued by the Office of the Governor and signed by the Permanent Secretary (Establishment), Felicia I. Makama.
He added that the circular directed all relevant ministries, departments and agencies, as well as education institutions across the state, to comply fully with the new policy.
Maiyaki said the decision reflected Governor Sani’s strong commitment to improving workers’ welfare and revitalising the education sector in Kaduna State.
He described experienced teachers as central to delivering quality education and sustaining learning outcomes.
“This policy is designed to honour years of dedicated service, retain invaluable experience in our classrooms, and motivate greater productivity for the benefit of our children and the future of Kaduna State,” he said.
The circular, according to Maiyaki, also stated that detailed implementation guidelines would be issued by the State Civil Service Commission in due course.
Governor Sani expressed confidence that the policy would boost teacher motivation, improve retention and significantly raise educational standards across the state.
He reiterated his administration’s broader commitment to strengthening public institutions and investing in human capital development.
