The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, has stated that his political ambition is to become the governor of Kano, not to continue as the party chairman.
Abbas made this declaration while reacting to comments by the Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, who threatened to leave the APC if Abbas remained the party chairman in the state.
In a viral video, Ata was seen criticizing the leadership of the APC in Kano, a statement that has sparked controversy among party members.
Responding in an interview with the BBC, Abbas dismissed Ata’s remarks, claiming that the minister is not a member of the APC.
He questioned Ata’s appointment, stating that even in his local government area, the APC did not secure significant votes in the last general election.
“He is not our party member. In the entire Kano State, it was only in his local government that the APC failed to secure massive votes. We were not informed about his appointment, and we have reported the matter to the president,” Abbas said.
Meanwhile, in the viral video, Ata accused the APC leadership in Kano of causing the party’s defeat in the 2023 elections.
He warned that if the current leadership structure remained unchanged, he and his supporters would leave the party.
“We are making it clear, if the chairman and his type are allowed to remain as party leaders, we will all leave,” Ata declared.
He further emphasized the need for a leadership change, stating, “We must bring in competent and capable individuals to lead if we want to succeed.”
The ongoing rift has heightened tensions within the APC in Kano, raising concerns about the party’s unity ahead of future elections.
