Twenty-two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, on Monday formally defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass defection, announced during plenary in Kano, marks a significant political shift in the state, tipping the legislative balance overwhelmingly in favour of the APC.

Speaking after the session, Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, said the decision followed wide consultations and was aimed at promoting peace, unity, and development in Kano.
“The decision was unanimous and taken in the overall interest of the people of the state,” Hussaini told journalists.
He added that the move was also informed by the need to reduce political rivalry and promote stability in the state amid rising security concerns.

“Aligning with the ruling party at the centre will help Kano attract greater attention and benefit from federal support already enjoyed by other states,” he explained.
During the same sitting, lawmakers also considered other legislative matters, including the presentation of a bill to amend the Kano State House of Assembly Service Commission Law.
According to Hussaini, the proposed amendment aims to strengthen the legislative institution and enhance service delivery.

The defectors, who include several principal officers of the House, insisted that their move was not driven by personal ambition.
They said in a joint statement, “This is not about individual interest. It is a collective resolve to ensure political stability and progress for Kano State.”
They also urged residents to remain calm, pledging commitment to unity, peace, and good governance.

With the latest development, the APC now controls 36 of the 40 seats in the Kano State House of Assembly, while the NNPP retains only two.
