The State Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano, Hussaini Isa Mairiga, has tendered his resignation from both his position and membership of the party.
Mairiga expressed frustration over what he called the “collapse of internal democracy” and a growing loss of faith in Nigeria’s political system.
Naijaonpoint reports that in a resignation letter dated October 19 and addressed to the party’s national chairman, Mairiga stated that Nigerian democracy had degenerated into a “system driven by personal enrichment and political patronage rather than service to the people.”
He said his decision followed deep reflection on the current political climate, noting that the ideals that once inspired his political participation had been eroded by self-interest and internal manipulation.
Mairiga further lamented that internal divisions within opposition parties were often “fuelled by external influences” deliberately aimed at weakening their unity and credibility.
He described the current situation in the SDP as a “severe leadership crisis”, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s authentic leadership.
Daily Trust quoted Mairiga as stating that these disputes have “eroded public confidence in the SDP and crippled its capacity to present itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party.”
Reflecting on the broader political environment, Mairiga expressed disappointment that Nigeria’s democratic journey had deviated from its founding principles.
“Our democracy has been hijacked by those who view politics as a business enterprise, not as a vehicle for service to humanity,” he wrote.
He added that until political actors return to the ideals of transparency, accountability, and service, Nigeria’s democracy would remain fragile and uninspiring.
However, the SDP leadership has yet to respond to Mairiga’s resignation at the time of filing this report.
