A 21-year-old student from Karnataka pursuing higher studies in Germany has died in a suspected drowning near Leipzig during an outing with friends, according to a report by TOI. German police have questioned four students, including two Indian nationals, as part of an investigation into the incident.
The deceased, Mohammed Aniz Abubakkqaer, was a resident of Marakada-Kunjathbail in Mangaluru.
He was studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree at Rahn Education Institution in Halle and was in his third semester.
According to the report, Aniz had relocated to Germany around 18 months ago after completing his pre-university education in Mangaluru.
His father, Marakada Abubakker Siddiq, is employed in Saudi Arabia.
Incident occurred during outing near Leipzig
The report said Aniz had joined classmates and friends on a trekking trip on Thursday morning. After completing the trek, the group reportedly visited a water recreation area near the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.
The incident occurred during the visit, with emergency services alerted to the Landauer Bridge area later that afternoon after Aniz was reported missing in the water.
Rescue teams later recovered his body from the site, the report said.
Police investigation underway
As part of the ongoing investigation, German authorities took four students into custody for questioning.
According to the report, the group included two Indian students.
The questioning is part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning.
No information has been released regarding possible charges or any findings from the investigation.
PA Hameed Padubidri, a pro bono lawyer assisting the family, said he is coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Berlin to facilitate the return of Aniz’s mortal remains to Mangaluru.
The report said efforts are currently focused on completing the required formalities so the family can perform his last rites in India.
