THE Kebbi State Government has announced a new minimum wage of N75,000 for civil servants.
This decision was made public during the unveiling of the Minimum Wage Committee’s report, which the governor has established.
For workers in Kebbi State, this moment has been eagerly awaited, especially in light of the agreement reached between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government regarding a N72,000 minimum wage.
The new minimum wage for Kebbi workers represents a modest increase over the Federal Government’s figure.
During the announcement, which included national leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress led by Joe Ajaero, Yakubu Bala, the Secretary to the State Government, stated that the agreement came after extensive discussions between the state executives and the labor union.
Following these talks, both sides agreed on the N75,000 minimum wage.
Governor Nasir Idris, after signing the new wage into law, emphasized that the welfare of Kebbi State workers is a top priority, drawing on his experience as a former labor leader now serving as governor.
He indicated that the new minimum wage would be implemented starting with the October salary, promising immediate payment within 72 hours.
NLC President Joe Ajaero lauded Governor Idris for this decision but also criticized some governors who, despite receiving higher oil revenues, have only approved minimal wage increases.
He reiterated that the union would persist in its efforts until more states implement adequate wages for their workers.
NLC leaders expressed their gratitude to the governor’s decision by chanting solidarity songs in appreciation on behalf of the state’s workers.
