A federal lawmaker, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has asked President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate leadership by holding the military commander responsible for the withdrawal of troops from a Kebbi school, moments before terrorists launched an attack that led to students being kidnapped.
This followed earlier remarks made by Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, alleging that soldiers stationed at the school were withdrawn at about 3:00 a.m., and that the attackers struck less than 45 minutes after the troop’s exit.
Rising during plenary on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, Abaribe insisted that the incident reflects a failure of accountability in Nigeria’s security chain of command.
“The governor of Kebbi said that somebody ordered the troops out, and people were kidnapped. Till today, nobody in Nigeria knows what happened. No questions have been asked, and we are sitting down as parliament, talking and talking, yet somebody is responsible,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a ceremony held on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education in the state, Halima Bande, formally handed over 24 rescued Maga schoolgirls to their families, bringing closure to one of the state’s most distressing abduction cases.
The ceremony, held in Birnin Kebbi, was filled with prayers and celebration as parents reunited with their children, following their rescue from terrorists after one week in captivity.
