Kid Cudi is setting the record straight after Jim Jones claimed he played a major role in launching his career with a remix of “Day n Nite.”

In a series of Instagram Stories, the rapper said he felt compelled to respond directly.

“I see something online that I have to address,” Cudi began. “Jimmy, I’m going to address you directly. You talking about how you were responsible for my success is a lie. You need to stop lying to people.”

Cudi explained that his breakout track had already taken off before Jones touched it. “‘Day n Nite’ was already a hit record before you touched it,” he said. “I put it on my MySpace and it blew up. I had an entire mixtape. Motown was courting me. Kanye wanted to sign me, all because of that song.”

He added that Jones’ version of events was painful to hear. “I like Jimmy, man. It kind of breaks my heart to hear him trying to take credit for something he’s not a part of,” Cudi said. “You saw a hit record and jumped on it. I didn’t ask you to do that.”

Jones recently told a podcast audience that “nobody knew who Kid Cudi was” before his remix. Cudi disagreed, saying, “I was an international artist from jump. I had the world.”
