The Kid Mero is stepping into one of New York radio’s most high-profile seats as the new host of Hot 97’s morning show. His debut airs January 13, just a month after the station pulled the plug on Ebro In The Morning following a 13-year run.
Hot 97 confirmed the move on Monday, announcing the launch of Hot 97 Mornings with Mero. The comedian and broadcaster called the moment full circle.
“Hot 97 is the station. It’s been the voice of NYC hip hop and culture for decades,” Mero said, adding that landing the morning slot is “a responsibility to continue that legacy while bringing it into this next era of media.”
MediaCo executive Kudjo Sogadzi praised the choice, saying Mero is “authentic, hilarious, fearless, and deeply connected to the community,” and predicted the new show will “set the tone for the city every morning.”
Mero already hosts the Victory Light with The Kid Mero podcast, and co-hosts 7 PM In Brooklyn alongside NBA legend Carmelo Anthony.
He replaces Ebro Darden, who exited Hot 97 amid controversy. After his axing, he claimed it was because of his political views.
Darden claimed they wanted his “s–t talking, anti-Netanyahu, anti-government, progressive s–t out the way,” later adding, “They give a f–k about access. They give a f–k about going with their little nerdy friends to the concerts because that helps them raise money. They’ve been trying to get to me for years, bro.”
