Get ready to head back to Arlen, Texas, for the return of King of the Hill. In recent years, series creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels have been working on getting a revival series off the ground for the hit cartoon, and at one point, the project was gearing up to be made at Fox. In September, it was reported that the planned revival fell through at the network, putting King of the Hill back on ice.
Enter Hulu. Per Deadline, it’s now been revealed that Hulu has ordered a King of the Hill revival, partnering up with 20th Television Animation alongside Judge and Daniels. Better yet, the surviving voice cast of the original show will be back to reprise their roles, which includes Judge as Hank Hill and Boomhauer, Kathy Najimy as Peggy Hill, Pamela Adlon as Bobby Hill, Stephen Root as Bill Dauterive, Johnny Hardwick as Dale Gribble, and Lauren Tom as Minh.
Sadly, Luanne will not be featured, as Brittany Murphy passed away in 2009. Tom Petty, who voiced her lover Lucky, also died in 2017. There’s no indication at this time that those roles will be recast.
Addressing the revival, ABC Entertainment’s Craig Erwich said, “We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago. This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group.”
Saladin Patterson (The Wonder Years revival) will serve as showrunner for the new King of the Hill. He is also executive producing with Michael Rotenberg and Howard Klein of 3 Arts, as well as Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment. Clearly a fan of the series, Patterson channeled Boomhauer in a statement about getting the job.
“Yeah, man I tell you whot man, that dang Ol’ Greg, talking about O.G. and then that Mike Judge,” he says. “Inspirations, man… the original show, dang ol’ classic… Got my kids, man, walking
around talking about ‘That’s my purse! I don’t know you!’ Feeling blessed, man, I tell you whot. ‘Feel so Good’ is a great song, I don’t care what no-dang-body says.”
20th Television’s executive VP, Marci Proietto, continues, “I’m so lucky to have been a part of this show from the very beginning and couldn’t be more excited to visit Arlen, Texas, once again with Mike, Greg and Saladin, who together are bringing a whole new perspective to the original series. We all want to thank the fans for their overwhelming support because they helped make this happen, and I can’t wait to share this new iteration through the lens of 2023 America. In the words of our beloved Peggy Hill, Ho yeah!”
King of the Hill ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009. Meanwhile, Judge’s other cartoon show from the 1990s has also been revived, but not at Hulu. Dubbed Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, a Beavis and Butt-Head revival series debuted on Paramount+ last year alongside the all-new movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe.
