The Kogi State Police Command has rescued passengers stranded for several hours after a Warri–Itakpe train derailed in the Adogo community of Ajaokuta Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Sunday in Lokoja, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Ovye-Aya, said all passengers were safely evacuated to the Ajaokuta train station and later assisted to continue to their destinations.
He stressed that there were no casualties, adding that officers acted immediately after receiving a distress call about the derailment.
Ovye-Aya explained that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, deployed security personnel to the area as soon as the call came in.
He added that the Commissioner personally visited the derailment site on Sunday, where he met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and some passengers.
According to him, “He also directed the deployment of additional security personnel to safeguard lives, property, and railway facilities.”
The police command reiterated its commitment to partnering with other security agencies to ensure the safety of passengers and critical infrastructure within the state.
Sunday’s derailment occurred barely a week after the Nigerian Railway Corporation resumed the Warri–Itakpe Train Service, following a previous incident in Agbor, Delta State, which halted operations for weeks.
