The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says it has foiled an attempt to smuggle cannabis and other illicit substances into the Kuje custodial centre in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a statement on Monday by the FCT command spokesperson, Samson Duza, the incident occurred around 12:45 pm on Saturday during a routine search.
He identified the suspect as Njimogu Ikedi, who allegedly concealed substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while attempting to visit an inmate.
Duza said the FCT controller of corrections, Christopher Jen, ordered the immediate arrest of the suspect.
He added that the suspect had since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.
Jen also issued a warning to visitors with “ulterior motives” to steer clear of the facility.
“Vigilant officers will always uncover such acts,” he said, while urging the public to support the service’s mandate of reforming and rehabilitating offenders to enhance public safety.
The interception comes more than a year after a woman was caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the same facility.
The woman, who was disguised as a visitor, had concealed the substances in food packs and later confessed that she was sent to deliver them to an inmate.
