KUN Khalifat FC have quit the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following sanctions imposed on the club for failing to honour their Matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors.
The club announced their withdrawal in an official statement last night, expressing shock as well as disappointment over the NPFL’s decision to deduct three points and three goals from their total, in addition to imposing a N10 million fine.
Kun Khalifat explained that the affected fixture, scheduled for Monday, could not be honoured due to logistical challenges, including the breakdown of the team’s vehicles.
According to the Owerri, Imo State-based club, the NPFL board had been duly informed of the situation in a letter dated February 1, 2026, the day before the match.
The statement, signed by the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Amaefula, accused the NPFL of ignoring their communication and unilaterally rescheduling the match before imposing the sanctions.
“The decision to forfeit 3 points and 3 goals, coupled with a fine of N10m, is not only disproportionate but a clear indication of the NPFL’s bias against our club,” Kun Khalifat stated.
“We believe that the sanctions are a travesty of justice and demonstrate a lack of willingness to engage with clubs in a fair and transparent manner.
“As a result of these unfair sanctions, we, Kun Khalifat FC, hereby announce our immediate withdrawal from the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).
“We can no longer continue to be part of a league that disregards the challenges faced by its member clubs and prioritises punishment over fairness and justice.”
The club also called on the NPFL to review its policies and procedures to ensure fair treatment of member clubs, while advising other teams to demand reforms and greater accountability from the league’s management.
Despite the withdrawal, Kun Khalifat said it would continue to explore other avenues to showcase its talents and contribute positively to Nigerian football.
Kun Khalifat, one of the four privately-owned clubs featuring in the 2025/2026 NPFL season along with Remo Stars, Ikorodu City and Barau FC, were promoted to the NPFL at the end of last season.
Kun Khalifat were bottom of the NPFL table, five points from safety before the points deduction and their subsequent withdrawal.
