The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has dismissed claims by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, that the party is open to political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Major, in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, said Kwankwaso has no authority to speak on behalf of the NNPP, stressing that the former Kano governor and his Kwankwasiyya group had been expelled from the party for alleged anti-party activities.
He was reacting to Kwankwaso’s remarks at a meeting of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Abuja on Thursday, where the former presidential candidate suggested that the NNPP was ready for alliances in 2027.
Major described the meeting as “null and void,” insisting that decisions taken there cannot override the judgements of the Abia and Federal Capital Territory High Courts, which affirmed the current party leadership.
“Any Nigerian entering into an alliance with Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya group on the basis of the NNPP will be doing so at their own risk,” Major warned.
The NNPP chairman also accused Kwankwaso of exploiting the party’s name to pursue personal interests, citing his recent criticism of the Federal Government over alleged neglect of the North as an example.
According to Major, the party has already written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requesting that it update its records to reflect the new leadership that emerged from a court-ordered convention.
He stressed that the NNPP remains open to alliances with other political parties, but not for the purpose of advancing personal vendettas.
“Our party is open to every Nigerian and shall provide equal opportunities for aspirants to undergo mandatory primaries. We shall not allow betrayals of our ticket again as we did in 2023,” Major said.
He urged INEC to respect the rule of law by recognising the party’s new leadership structure.
