THE Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Kamilu Salami, who was abducted by bandits 25 days ago, has been released, sparking widespread jubilation within his community in Kwara State.
The monarch was kidnapped on a Saturday morning while working on his farm and was freed late yesterday night. His return was met with excitement as residents flooded the palace to welcome him home and celebrate his safe return alongside his family.
Confirming the development today, community spokesperson Ayinla Lawal disclosed that the monarch’s release followed the payment of a substantial ransom, delivered to the kidnappers in two installments.
Although the exact amount was not revealed, Lawal noted that the funds were raised solely by members of the community, with no assistance from either the local or state government.
“I’m glad to announce that our monarch was released on Tuesday night,” Lawal said. “Our elders have advised that the ransom amount should not be disclosed, but it was significant. The entire burden was borne by the community, and it was a very difficult period for us.”
He expressed gratitude to God for the monarch’s safe return and thanked the media and community members for their support throughout the ordeal.
Lawal also voiced confidence that the incident would not reoccur, noting that additional vigilantes and hunters have been recruited to strengthen local security.
He added that displaced residents are expected to return now that peace has been restored.
Following his release, the monarch was taken to Ilorin for urgent medical attention. His younger brother, Aliyu, who accompanied him to a private hospital, also confirmed the release, recounting the fear and uncertainty he faced while liaising with the kidnappers.
Aliyu explained that the kidnappers frequently changed locations and communicated through the monarch’s phone, making it difficult to identify or track them. Despite his fears, he said he was encouraged by community members to continue negotiations because of his close relationship with the monarch.
Efforts to speak directly with the Ojibara were unsuccessful, as he was said to be resting and receiving medical care. According to Aliyu, the monarch will remain unavailable for public interaction for the next few days as he recovers.
