THE Badagry Local Government Chairman, Babatunde Hunpe, has declared a seven-day mourning period following the death of the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty Aholu Menu Toyi I.
Hunpe made the declaration in Badagry through a statement released today by his Chief Press Secretary, Kriko Augustine. He said the announcement was made with the approval of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the statement, the revered traditional ruler, also known as De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, passed away peacefully yesterday, January 12, after what was described as a long, distinguished, and impactful reign dedicated to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s cultural heritage.
Hunpe described the late monarch as a vital link between generations, a respected guardian of tradition, and a moral guide to his people.
He said the mourning period was declared in honour of the monarch’s service and enduring legacy, urging residents of Badagry to reflect on his selfless leadership, enduring values, and lifelong commitment to the community, Lagos State, and Nigeria.
The council chairman also extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry Local Government and Lagos State, the royal family, and the people of Badagry.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death.
The governor described the passing as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and the country, noting that it marked the end of an era defined by wisdom, cultural preservation, and unwavering dedication to the development of Badagry.
Until his death, Menu-Toyi, who ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. He reigned for nearly 49 years.
