THE Lagos State Government has arrested a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver in connection with the death of a pedestrian, identified as Elizabeth Fresh, who was hit by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction in Ikeja.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, and involved a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company under its regulatory oversight.

In a statement dated January 12 and signed by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA said the driver fled the scene after the incident but was later apprehended and handed over to the police.

According to the authority, eyewitness accounts established that Miss Fresh was struck by the BRT vehicle operated by the company.

LAMATA said it promptly reached out to the victim’s family to express condolences, adding that the family requested the arrest and prosecution of the driver.

The agency noted that it worked closely with the transport operator to identify and produce the driver, who was presented yesterday and handed over to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of the company’s manager.

Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to safety and accountability across all transport services regulated by the Lagos State Government.

The authority also advised pedestrians to use pedestrian bridges when crossing BRT corridors, warning that failure to do so puts lives at risk.

LAMATA said it would continue to collaborate with transport operators, security agencies, and the public to prevent similar incidents and enhance commuter safety across Lagos.
