LAGOS: Gridlock as Lekki billboard traps truck, Admiralty way shut

Ikoyi accident

COMMUTERS faced major gridlock this morning in the upscale Ikoyi and Lekki areas of Lagos State after a container-laden truck became lodged beneath an overhead billboard near the Lekki Link Bridge, heading toward Alexandra Roundabout.

The incident, which occurred around 5:30 a.m., saw the truck occupying approximately 85% of the road, severely disrupting traffic and rendering the route impassable.

Motorists and early commuters were left stranded as emergency personnel worked tirelessly to clear the obstruction.

Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), revealed that a welder had been called in to cut through parts of the structure trapping the truck.

“The road has been temporarily cordoned off as efforts continue to remove the damaged barrier,” he said.

In response to the situation, authorities have also closed Admiralty Way heading into Lekki.

According to a statement by Taofiq, the truck got stuck while attempting to pass under a billboard structure, becoming entangled in the iron framework.

“The complexity of the entrapment required the intervention of a technical expert, who is currently working to cut through the iron structure and free the vehicle,” he explained.

“For safety reasons, the expressway has been temporarily closed to ensure a smooth and secure rescue operation, protecting both the workers and the public,” he added.

LASTMA has apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that normal traffic flow will resume as soon as the operation is completed.
