IMPEACHED Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has labeled the corruption allegations against him as “fabricated and unfounded.”
Obasa during a welcome rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja, asserted that he is not concerned about being impeached but stressed that proper procedures were not followed.
He stated that his removal was planned while he was out of the country and accused the state police commissioner of facilitating the process.
Obasa alleged that security forces, led by the police commissioner, entered the assembly complex and his homes in Agege and Ikeja, confining his family indoors with over 200 officers present.
He dismissed the accusations of misappropriation, ridiculing claims that a gate construction cost N16 billion, asking, “Is it the wall of Jericho?”
“I am not afraid of being removed; after all, it’s not my father’s chieftaincy title. I represent my people, and they have re-elected me six times. If you want to take action, do it properly,” he stated.
He noted that his removal occurred while he was abroad, emphasizing that Lagos is a unique place that should not be disrespected.
Obasa referenced the case of former Speaker Rt. Hon Jokotola Pelumi, stating that when Pelumi was removed, he was present in the assembly and “we did not call the police.”
He also mentioned that when his sister, former Deputy Speaker Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, was removed, there was no police involvement.
He insisted that an innocent person should not be discredited without evidence of wrongdoing.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly is held to a higher standard of excellence,” he added.
Obasa expressed gratitude to the members of the governance advisory council and Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, referring to him as his brother.
Obasa was impeached on January 13 by over two-thirds of the 40-member legislative body due to alleged misconduct and various offenses.
His Deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was subsequently elected as the new speaker, making her the first female to lead the legislative assembly in the South-West state.
