The premises of Mega Plaza on Breadfruit Street, Lagos Island have been sealed by officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO).

The facility was shut down by the state government over the discharge of untreated wastewater into the public drains.

A statement from the state government said the actions of the managers of the plaza constituted an environmental nuisance.

It was alleged that Mega Plaza usually use a pumping machine to discharge the bad fluid into the drainage, road and lagoon at night, exposing residents of the area to communicable diseases.

The agency noted that it had to come hard of the plaza to demonstrate its dedication to ensuring credible and sustainable wastewater management in the state.

It was disclosed that the enforcement and compliance officers of LSWMO took time to monitor the property at night and took pictures of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours.

The General Manager of the agency, Mr Adefemi Afolabi, maintained that the state has zero tolerance for Environmental pollution and degradation.

He reaffirmed the organisation’s undeterred efforts at ensuring a clean and healthy environment in Lagos State for the sake of the public health of the citizens of the State.

Mr Afolabi emphasised that properties and facilities in the state that fall foul of the law would continue to be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
